Skype For BlackBerry 10 Arrives, But It’s A World Of Hurt

BlackBerry said on Wednesday it plans to fill one of the biggest gaps in the app line-up on its new BlackBerry 10 devices with a long-awaited Skype application.

Skype has officially announced the availability of its BlackBerry 10 app, out initially for Q10 devices, which means not many people will have access to it, since the Q10 doesn’t ship until the beginning of May.

The good news is, the app provides does indeed provide access to Skype VoIP and chat services. The bad news is, it does so with a bare minimum of elegance resulting in a painful UX.while it may solve some of BlackBerry’s app issues, Android porting isn’t a great long-term solution.

Skype, which was acquired by Microsoft Corp in 2011, allows its users to communicate via voice, video or chat over the Internet, by-passing traditional telephone networks. The service has hundreds of millions of users across the globe.

The announcement comes a day after BlackBerry said its new Q10 smartphone will be available in Canada on May 1, and in the United States before the end of May. The Q10, which comes with the physical keyboard that many of BlackBerry’s core fan base cherish, is the second device to be powered by the company’s new BB10 operating system.

Skype will be available on the Q10 on launch day. Users of the existing Z10 touchscreen device will have to wait a few weeks more to get Skype, after a software upgrade on the operating system, BlackBerry said.

A smaller app base than Apple’s iOS and Google Inc’s Android platforms has been one of the biggest criticisms of the new BlackBerry system. It has yet to offer some big-name apps like Netflix and Instagram.

The sun has been increasingly vibrant these days. It has been causing rage impact to the life on the earth in different ways. On Thursday (April 11), the sun has emitted a massive solar flare that is measured as the largest one this year so far. 

The solar storm is now heading to the earth fast, but is not fierce enough to directly cause harm to humans and other earthly creatures. The flare is rated as M6.5 class, meaning that it is not as much strong as the largest solar flares of last year.

The recent solar flare resulted when a huge and Earth-facing group of sunspots flung towards the earth at high speed. NASA’s monitoring satellite namely the Solar Dynamics Observatory first spotted the Coronal Mass Ejection (CME),  April 13th. Indeed, sky watchers should be able to watch colorful auroras in the sky owing to these geomagnetic storms.

In the early 1980s, images from NASA’s Voyager spacecraft showed two to three dark bands on Saturn, and scientists theorized that water could have been showering down into those bands from the rings. Those bands were not seen again until this team observed the planet in near-infrared wavelengths with the W.M Keck Observatory on Mauna Kea, in Hawaii, in April 2011. The effect was difficult to discern because it involves looking for a subtle emission from bright parts of Saturn. It required an instrument like that on Keck, which can split up a large range of light.

“Where Jupiter is glowing evenly across its equatorial regions, Saturn has dark bands where the water is falling in, darkening the ionosphere,” said Tom Stallard

These shadows cover some 30 to 43 percent of the planet’s upper atmosphere surface from around 25 to 55 degrees latitude.

"The idea of integrating NFC into a cap came from a brainstorm around NFC and how it allows you to connect the real world and the virtual world in a seamless, amazing way," Capify's Robert Wingrove has told NFC World. "

"We then started thinking about fashion accessories and realised that a cap is much more than a functional thing you wear on your head. It is an extension of you and your personality. We thought why not take this expression to the next level with a product like Capify?

"In terms of target customers we have two types of users we are focussing on. A cap as a fashion accessory appeals to an extremely broad audience, that encompasses many different tastes and demographics. 

  
It's this flexibility as a fashion accessory that appeals to us since a hip hop fan from Brooklyn would be equally at home in a cap, as a middle age baseball fan from Minnesota.

"But this flexibility can also make it hard to get the marketing message right. This is why one of our key features is that people can update the tags in the hat themselves, using a web based interface that is a bit easier than tagging a tag with an app. We will be working with Flomio to develop this system off the back of their NFC Actions system."

"We feel that linking the hat to exclusive content or usability (like being able to receive discounts at a sports stadium) means we would broaden the appeal of the hats away from just a niche audience like our direct to consumer proposition and take this to all types of users," says Wingrove.

"We plan to work with record labels, sports teams and brands to let the cap be the springboard into getting exclusive content and building a relationship with a brand. Some ideas for this would be if a record label is launching a new album they could send caps to journalists and super fans, where they can download an exclusive song from the link in the cap. Or a sports team can update the link with exclusive team news or info, or tie the cap into loyalty at their stadium where they can tap the cap and earn points when making purchases."

"In terms of go live, we are looking to launch on Kickstarter in mid February and if we hit our funding target we will roll out the caps in mid March. We actually have a few caps available now but in order to bring them down to a decent price point we need to place larger orders which is what the funding would go towards."
