WhatsApp hits 1 billion installs on Android, the second non-Google app to do so
While many questioned whether Facebook had paid too much to acquire WhatsApp last year, the mobile messaging app’s already formidable numbers continue to impress more than 12 months on.
Indeed, WhatsApp for Android has now notched up a staggering one billion downloads on Android alone, making it only the second non Google app to achieve this milestone. We know this because Google Play publishes installation ranges for each app, and in WhatsApp’s case this now shows as being between 1 billion and 5 billion downloads.
Of course, this doesn’t mean that one billion people on Android are actively using the app back in January, WhatsApp revealed it has 700 million monthly active users (MAU) across iOS and Android, 70 percent of whom are active each and every day. Two months on, that MAU figure will no doubt have increased, but it’s hard to say exactly how many of the 1 billion-plus Android installs are active users.
Also, it’s worth noting here that while Google calculates app downloads on a per account basis rather than per device, it doesn’t consider those who have uninstalled the app. So this doesn’t mean there are 1 billion people or devices out there with WhatsApp currently installed.
Nonetheless, very few apps have achieved such a high number of downloads Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube have managed it, while Facebook became the first non Google service to meet that magic milestone last year. Now with WhatsApp, Facebook has two applications with at least one billion Android installations each.
While the $22 billion price tag may still seem a little hefty, Facebook knew what it was buying into when it took on the mobile messaging app last year it was future-proofing itself and ensuring it remained relevant as a company, at a time when there are so many different means of communication at our disposal.

Google has released a tool that lets Android apps run on any machine that can run its Chrome browser. Called Arc Welder, the tool acts as a wrapper around Android apps so they can run on Windows, OSX and Linux machines.
The software expands the places that Android apps can run and might make it easier for developers to get code working on different machines. But one developer said it was better to write apps that run "natively" rather than via separate software. Native code
Arc the App Runtime for Chrome was first released in late 2014 as a way for Android apps to run on machines running Google's Chrome operating system. The OS is used on many netbooks and other small machines made by Google and some of its hardware partners.
Now Google has produced a new tool, called Arc Welder, which converts Android apps into versions that can be used with the Chrome browser, not just the OS. With Welder it has also added support for many Google Play services so when apps are converted they do not lose access to payment systems, maps and other functions they expect.
In its developer documentation, Google said the underlying technology for Arc Welder meant converted apps should run almost as quickly as they did on a phone or tablet. With Arc Welder Google, it is seeking a way to help developers get their creations onto as many machines as possible, but one developer was not sure it would accomplish that aim.
"The best way to make apps by far is to make them natively using the tools that they give us," said Sam Furr, director and co-founder of development studio The App Developers. He said that moving away from those well-known development systems can mean losing some behaviours, such as touch combinations, that people expect. He also wondered if a converted app running via a browser sitting in a separate operating system would be as fast as one developed natively.
Running a phone app on a desktop would inevitably mean losing some functions, he said, because bigger computers lack some of the extras, such as accelerometers and GPS receivers, that are now standard on smartphones. Mr Furr said the ability to reach lots of different operating systems with just one app was potentially attractive.
"When building an app you want to get it to as many people as possible but you have to ask how long it will take to get it on other platforms," he said. "There's no shortage of cross-platform frameworks and some of them are very good," he said, "but in our experience you do not get the same end product as you would when you build it natively."

Researchers at the University of Surrey's 5G Innovation Centre (5GIC) managed one terabit per second (Tbps) many thousands of times faster than current data connections.
The head of the 5GIC said he hoped to demonstrate the technology to the public in 2018. Ofcom has said 5G could be available in Britain by 2020.
At 1Tbps, it would be theoretically possible to download a file 100 times the size of a feature film in about three seconds. The speed is more than 65,000 times faster than average 4G download speeds.
It is also far in excess of the previous best achieved in tests: Samsung's 7.5 gigabits per second (Gbps), which is less than 1% of the Surrey team's speed.
It remains to be seen whether it will be possible to replicate the speeds in real-world conditions. Prof Tafazolli said he wanted to carry out more tests around the university's campus before going public.
According to news website V3, 5GIC director Prof Rahim Tafazolli said: "We have developed 10 more breakthrough technologies and one of them means we can exceed 1Tbps wirelessly. This is the same capacity as fibreoptics but we are doing it wirelessly. We want to be the first in the world to show such high speeds"
The regulator Ofcom has been supportive of efforts to get 5G to the public and, last month, it called for input from the industry on how to go about it.
It has said that 5G would be able to use very high-frequency spectrum above 6 GHz to run a range of services from holographic projections to financial trading. The regulator said it expected 5G mobile to be capable of delivering between 10 and 50Gbps, compared with the 4G average download speed of 15Megabits per second (Mbps).
Speaking as Ofcom launched its consultation in January this year, its acting chief executive Steve Unger said: "5G must deliver a further step change in the capacity of wireless networks, over and above that currently being delivered by 4G."
The breakthrough by the 5GIC team brings that one step closer. But Prof Tafazolli said there were hurdles to overcome before 5G would be ready
"An important aspect of 5G is how it will support applications in the future. We don't know what applications will be in use by 2020, or 2030 or 2040 for that matter, but we know they will be highly sensitive to latency.
"We need to bring end-to-end latency down to below one millisecond so that it can enable new technologies and applications that would just not be possible with 4G," he told V3.

Do you know that certain people can access Facebook accounts without the need for passwords? Some Facebook employees have direct access to your account.
But Facebook has explained that this is part of a tiered and strictly-managed customer support set-up, with employees abusing this trust getting fired, VentureBeat reported.
"Access is tiered and limited by job function, and designated employees may only access the amount of information that's necessary to carry out their job responsibilities, such as responding to bug reports or account support inquiries."
"Two separate systems are in place to detect suspicious patterns of behaviour, and these systems produce reports once per week, which are reviewed by two independent security teams," VentureBeat quoted a Facebook spokesperson as saying.
"We have a zero tolerance approach to abuse, and improper behaviour results in termination," the spokesperson added. The VentureBeat report said Facebook's explanation stemmed from the experience of Paavo Siljamaki, director at the record label Anjunabeats.
Siljamaki narrated about a visit to Facebook offices in LA, with nice people there giving advice on how to use Facebook better. He said he was asked if it was okay for them to look at his profile, and he agreed. He then said a Facebook engineer logged in directly without entering the password.
"Just made me wonder how many of Facebook's staff have this kind of 'master' access to anyone's account? What are the rules on who and when they can access our private content and how would we know if someone did," he wondered.

Automotive head-up displays were once limited to high-end luxury sedans and sports cars, but in recent years they have started trickling down to affordable models like the latest Mini Cooper and Mazda3. Navdy, a startup from San Francisco, is aiming to broaden this tech even more with its new, portable device that combines all of the features of a HUD with apps and smartphone controls.
The Navdy sits on a vehicle's dashboard and has a tiny screen that seemingly projects information about six feet in front of the car. It plugs into the model's OBDII port for data and syncs with Android 4.3+ or iOS 7+ smartphones. When you're driving normally, Navdy displays important info like speed and direction, but with hand gesture and voice recognition the user can also control apps, take calls and dictate text messages.
Navdy is pitched as much for its safety benefits than as a cool toy. According to the company, it keeps your focus on the road and eliminates the need to look down at a phone. The device already supports popular apps like Google Maps, Spotify and iTunes Music and can read text messages.
"Touchscreen-based apps force you to take your eyes off the road. So we started by completely rethinking what the experience of using apps behind the wheel should be like," said company co-founder and CEO Doug Simpson in the company's release.
Pre-orders for the Navdy are available now with shipments starting in early 2015, and for the first 30 days it's priced at $299 TO $499 after that. The company is also borrowing from Kickstarter and allowing early-bird customers to vote on what apps and features the device should support later.

Google is buying the travel app startup JetPac for an undisclosed amount of money, JetPac announced on its website Monday.
"We look forward to working on exciting projects with our colleagues at Google," the announcement read. Jetpac added that it will be removing its apps from the App Store in the coming days, and will cease support for Apple on September 15.
JetPac ,which started in 2011, gained $2.4 million in funding in 2012 before launching in 2013. The app creates visual city guides by analyzing photos from social media to infer key information about the places they were taken. "We can spot lipstick, blue sky views, hipster mustaches and more, through advanced image processing on billions of photos," JetPac's website says.
The process JetPac uses to analyze the photos is called neural network technology, The Guardian reported. The technology is a system of algorithms that can be trained to recognize different elements within photos. For example, the app can recognize things like makeup, accessories or facial hair in photos and determine the vibe of a restaurant or bar. JetPac can also crawl Facebook photos, using an algorithm to gauge where your friends had the most fun. The app has created more than 6,000 city guides so far using this advanced technology.
It is still not known what exactly Google will do with the acquisition, and if it will integrate the app's artificial intelligence technology into its image search and map services. Google previously acquired robotics-design company Boston Dynamics and artificial intelligence firm DeepMind, fueling chatter that it is seeking to grow its robotics and artificial intelligence capabilities.
