WhatsApp hits 1 billion installs on Android, the second non-Google app to do so

While many questioned whether Facebook had paid too much to acquire WhatsApp last year, the mobile messaging app’s already formidable numbers continue to impress more than 12 months on.

Indeed, WhatsApp for Android has now notched up a staggering one billion downloads on Android alone, making it only the second non Google app to achieve this milestone. We know this because Google Play publishes installation ranges for each app, and in WhatsApp’s case this now shows as being between 1 billion and 5 billion downloads.

Of course, this doesn’t mean that one billion people on Android are actively using the app back in January, WhatsApp revealed it has 700 million monthly active users (MAU) across iOS and Android, 70 percent of whom are active each and every day. Two months on, that MAU figure will no doubt have increased, but it’s hard to say exactly how many of the 1 billion-plus Android installs are active users.

Also, it’s worth noting here that while Google calculates app downloads on a per account basis rather than per device, it doesn’t consider those who have uninstalled the app. So this doesn’t mean there are 1 billion people or devices out there with WhatsApp currently installed.

Nonetheless, very few apps have achieved such a high number of downloads Gmail, Google Maps, and YouTube have managed it, while Facebook became the first non Google service to meet that magic milestone last year. Now with WhatsApp, Facebook has two applications with at least one billion Android installations each.

While the $22 billion price tag may still seem a little hefty, Facebook knew what it was buying into when it took on the mobile messaging app last year it was future-proofing itself and ensuring it remained relevant as a company, at a time when there are so many different means of communication at our disposal.

Google is buying the travel app startup JetPac for an undisclosed amount of money, JetPac announced on its website Monday.

"We look forward to working on exciting projects with our colleagues at Google," the announcement read. Jetpac added that it will be removing its apps from the App Store in the coming days, and will cease support for Apple on September 15.

JetPac ,which started in 2011, gained $2.4 million in funding in 2012 before launching in 2013. The app creates visual city guides by analyzing photos from social media to infer key information about the places they were taken. "We can spot lipstick, blue sky views, hipster mustaches and more, through advanced image processing on billions of photos," JetPac's website says. 



The process JetPac uses to analyze the photos is called neural network technology, The Guardian reported. The technology is a system of algorithms that can be trained to recognize different elements within photos. For example, the app can recognize things like makeup, accessories or facial hair in photos and determine the vibe of a restaurant or bar. JetPac can also crawl Facebook photos, using an algorithm to gauge where your friends had the most fun. The app has created more than 6,000 city guides so far using this advanced technology.

It is still not known what exactly Google will do with the acquisition, and if it will integrate the app's artificial intelligence technology into its image search and map services. Google previously acquired robotics-design company Boston Dynamics and artificial intelligence firm DeepMind, fueling chatter that it is seeking to grow its robotics and artificial intelligence capabilities.

We Search More On Apps, Less On Google Now

We’re using apps on our smartphones and tablets much more to look things up now, according to a new report out from eMarketer. That means a serious drop in ad revenue for many of the major search engines Google, Bing and Yahoo.

According to the report, Google mobile ads saw a dramatic 17 percent drop in revenue from 2012. The search giant owned 82.8 percent of the $2.24 billion search market just two years ago. While the U.S. mobile ad market brought in a whopping $17.73 billion this year, mobile search spending jumped to more than half of that at $9.02 billion but Google’s piece of that pie dropped to just 65.7 percent.

Basically, we’re on our smartphones a lot more when looking things up than we are on our desktops. And we’re fragmented in the way we search now as well. Google is all search for everything but can’t necessarily tell us in a click the best restaurant or what the price is on a coveted item. We use niche travel apps such as Kayak to look up travel info, Trulia to search for homes and local business search company Yelp to look up local businesses.

A Nielsen consumer report out earlier this year confirms the shift to mobile. We’re spending an average of 34 hours using the Internet on our mobile phones every month compared to 27 hours using the Internet on our desktop.

According to the eMarketer report, we’re really big on local search. Yelp is leading the pack here in terms of ad-revenue growth. Predictions for the local business search company are at 136 percent, or $119 million in mobile ad revenue this year. While that’s a drop in the bucket compared to the spend for Google, Yahoo or Bing, it’s a telling shift in consumer behavior. Revenues are expected to triple by 2016 for Yelp. Meanwhile, Google revenue is expected to drop to 64.2 percent of the overall market by then.

No word yet on what the “other” category is in the report. Also note that this report does not mean Google is losing revenue. On the contrary, it’s still growing it’s just capturing less of the overall market than it was before. As mentioned above, the total mobile ad spend has jumped by nearly $7 billion in the last two years. That still gives Google close to $6 billion in mobile search ad revenue.

The bottom line here is that niche apps are taking over the way in which we search online, and they’re doing this because we are spending much more time looking things up on mobile devices than we are on our desktops.

Google overtakes Apple as world's top brand: survey

U.S. search engine Google has overtaken rival technology titan Apple as the world’s top brand in terms of value, global market research agency Millward Brown said Wednesday.

Google’s brand value shot up 40 percent in a year to $158.84 billion, Millward Brown said in its 2014 100 Top BrandZ report.

“Google has been extremely innovative this year with Google Glass, investments in artificial intelligence and a range of partnerships,” said Benoit Tranzer, the head of Millward Brown France.

Google Glass is Internet-linked eyewear for which the firm has joined hands with Luxottica, a frame giant behind Ray-Ban and other high-end brands, to sell the new product in the United States.

“All these activities send a very strong signal to consumers about the essence of Google,” Tranzer said.

Apple, which dominated the top position for three straight years, saw its brand value fall by 20% to $147.88 billion.



The top 10 of the 100 slots were dominated by U.S. firms. IBM was in third place at $107.54 billion, a fall of 4%, followed by Microsoft at $90.19 billion 29% rise.



Fast food chain McDonald’s ranked next at $85.71 billion, followed by Coca Cola ($80.68 billion), it said.


China led in the insurance sector with Ping An valued at $12.4 billion and China Life ($12 billion).

French luxury goods manufacturer Louis Vuitton ranked 30th overall but was the top luxury brand with a value of more than $25 billion.

Brand value is calculated on the basis of the firms’ financial performance and their standing among consumers.

Twitter and LinkedIn entered the Top 100 for the first time, at numbers 71 and 78, respectively. Amazon entered the Top 10 at number 10, the first retailer to achieve this distinction

The 10 Highest Rated Tech Companies for Internships

The social media company has the highest rated internships, according to Glassdoor. The jobs website, which offers reviews and commentary on workplaces all over the country, has compiled a list of the 25 companies that offer the best internship experiences, based on intern feedback. From Yahoo to Google to Apple, major tech companies managed to make it onto the list.

In addition to the data, Glassdoor also shared some of the questions potential interns were asked during the interview process:

    Facebook business operations intern interview: “You have a bag of N strings, and at random, you pull out an end. You pull out another end and you tie the two ends together. You take another two string ends and tie them together. You repeat this until there are no loose ends left to pull out of the bag. What is the expected number of loops?”

    Epic Systems intern interview: “An apple costs 40 cents, a grapefruit costs 80 cents and an orange costs 60 cents. Under these circumstances, how much does a pear cost?”

After answering these tough fastballs, these aspiring employees went on to enjoy their internships. We went through the list and boiled it down to the top 10 highest rated tech companies.

1. Facebook 

The social network is the number one overall company for hiring interns. It received a 4.6 out of 5 rating on Glassdoor.

“The culture is pretty awesome and has staying power," an anonymous software engineer intern told Glassdoor. "The intern program is amazing and everyone is actually happy that the interns are there.”

2. Google 

The mega search engine was at the top of the list in 2012 and 2013. Alas, Facebook just barely edged it out, also receiving a 4.6.

“Having the opportunity to take a look at all the wonderful stuff they've developed and taking part in the creation of new tools and products is an amazing experience, especially if you're still in college," a Google software engineer intern said for the study.

3. Qualcomm

Famous for creating and designing mobile technology, Qualcomm followed quickly behind Google with a 4.5 rating.

"Interns are automatically being considered for return internship opportunities or a full time position," an interim engineering intern for the company said.

4. Epic Systems

Epic actually ranked at number 5 in the overall company list, but lands at number 4 among tech companies. The software behemoth, which specializes in health organizations, clocked in with a 4.5 rating.

“Epic has a great support staff for interns, and ultimately, they want to see their interns both do excellent work and learn a lot at their time at Epic," said an Epic Systems software development intern. "It is a good place to start out.”

5. Intel

The massive manufacturers of digital technology came in overall at number 6, but took fifth place among tech companies. Intel, which made waves last month with its plans to cut jobs, landed a 4.4 rating from its interns.

6. Microsoft

One of the most valuable tech brands in the world, Microsoft landed on the list with a 4.3 rating, though it was actually number 7 on the top 25 list.

7. Apple

One of the few tech companies in the world to achieve massive success and a cult-like following, Apple landed at number 9 on the overall top 25 list. It jumped up to number 7 on the tech list, gathering a 4.3 rating.

8. Texas Instruments

Semiconductor design and manufacturing company TI (which you may recognize from its popular calculator division) came in at number 12 out of the original the top 25. Interns flocked to give it a 4.2 rating.

9. Yahoo 

Aspiring Marissa Mayers gave an internship at Yahoo a whirl. Though it was number 14 among the top 25, it gets spot 9 in the tech list. The company received a 4.1 rating on Glassdoor.

According to an anonymous Yahoo software engineer intern, one of the tough interview questions was, “What will you do if the Internet is not working?”

10. Hewlett-Packard

HP claimed the 16th spot on the list of the top 25, but jumped up much higher on the tech side. The corporation gets the number 10 spot with a 4.1 overall rating.

The Nexus 5 is rumored to be upon us soon, and the rumors and leaks are popping up everywhere. 

Google’s latest Nexus device, made by LG, showed up today in a curious place indeed.

Got to handle the Nexus 5. It is smaller than the G2.Didn’t actually measure it, but holding it in the hand it is smaller.It does feel good holding it. The black back cover feels like my Nexus 7.The screen was ok, didn’t wow me like the Note 3.The bezel is very small.

The phone certainly looks like the alleged Nexus 5 that we’ve been seeing over the past month or so. It’s shown up on Google’s campus, at a party and LG filed for a patent for a device that appears to be the same as well. It’s got a vertical “Nexus” logo like the Nexus 7 and a solid matte black finish.

Over 500,000 People Pirated ‘Breaking Bad’ Series Finale 12 Hours After Appearing Online

Breaking Bad series finale was something for the history books, clocking 500,000 pirated downloads just 12 hours after the first copy appeared online.

Most users who pirate shows and movies do so because of availability issues, which is common outside of the U.S. But the numbers do show the other side of downloading, where users opt to download the content even when legal channels are available.

Based on data from TorrentFreak, 500,000 had downloaded the Breaking Bad finale within just 12 hours of the torrent going live. This puts the Breaking Bad series finale at the top of the chart for the most-pirated TV show of the year, up there with Game Of  Thrones.

According to the cart above, Australia takes the cake, coming in with 18 percent of the total downloads. The U.S. comes in second at 14.5 percent of downloads, which is interesting considering the myriad of legal ways to watch the show there. The U.K. comes in third with 9.3 percent.

At the peak of the downloading frenzy, one single copy of the Breaking Bad finale had over 85,000 downloaders. If we add up the four most popular torrents, we end up with a whopping 190,000 downloaders.
