Vodafone launch NFC-based mobile wallet across Europe(SmartPass)

Vodafone is joining the mobile payments market with its own wallet service, that will launch across its European footprint. The service already went live in Spain, with Germany following in mid-December, and the Netherlands, UK and Italy in spring 2014.

Aside from allowing users to pay for goods with nothing but their phone, the Vodafone Wallet will also be able to hold travel cards, loyalty cards, gift cards and vouchers; and eventually replace all plastic cards in a customer’s wallet or purse. Or at least, that’s what the Big Red carrier would want.

The first application for the mobile wallet, Vodafone SmartPass, was developed in partnership with Visa and can be funded when needed.

The Wallet relies on NFC and equivalent EMV-compliant payment technologies to send encrypted data over short distances. The service will initially be available on NFC-enabled smartphones from Samsung, Sony and HTC, with plans to expand the range next year. On the other hand, if a customer doesn’t have a NFC compatible smartphone, they can still use the mobile payment solution by downloading the Vodafone SmartPass app and applying for an “NFC tag” that can be attached to their device.

As part of the mobile payments push, Voda is working with major European banks to integrate their card portfolios into the wallet. To that end, the company made sure its solution is the first European mobile payment service built on the GlobalPlatform open standard.

The other bad news is that it’s just a design and as far as I can tell there isn’t even a working prototype yet. On the upside though, it’s freaking cool and I totally want one. And so do you.

Andrey Kokorin, a Russian graduate from Ural State Academy of Architecture and Arts, has entered his “Innovative Laser Device For Cutting Of Foodstuff” (great name, right?), or BLITZ, design into the annual James Dyson Awards.

While it doesn’t quite suck or blow like Dyson’s vacuums or dryers, it does cut up all kinds of food into various shapes, with a focus on replacing unsanitary and unsafe kitchen knives with a fast, clean and 110 per cent more awesome tool a goddamn laser.

Sure, it might look like a robot’s head, but when it swings open, a two-liter bowl pops out which you then fill up with whatever foodstuffs you desire. The menu to control the device is projected onto an adjacent work surface, which you can fiddle around with to select your desired cutting settings.

Hit what you want, whack your food in, and the device will start slicing up your food along three dimensions. Radical.

If Kokorin is successful in his national heats, his design will head on over to the international final where he could potentially win £10,000 for himself and his school, as well as fame, fortune, and a kickass laser knife.

2013 - 2014 CRITICS AWARD Announced !!

THE CW TO BROADCAST THE “CRITICS’ CHOICE MOVIE AWARDS” AND “CRITICS’ CHOICE TELEVISION AWARDS” IN 2014

The CW Television Network has partnered with the Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA) to broadcast the 19th annual “Critics’ Choice Movie Awards” for the second consecutive year, and also the 4th annual “Critics’ Choice Television Awards” in 2014, it was announced today by Joey Berlin, BFCA/BTJA President and John Maatta, Executive Vice President, The CW.

 
This marks the first time that the “Critics’ Choice Television Awards,” which takes place in June, will be broadcast in its entirety in primetime.

The 19th annual “Critics’ Choice Movie Awards” gala is slated to air on January 16, 2014, and the nominees will be announced on Monday, December 16, 2013. Locations and hosts for the “Critics’ Choice Movie Awards” and the “Critics’ Choice Television Awards” will be announced at a later date.

“We are thrilled to expand our partnership with The CW to include the ‘Critics’ Choice Television Awards’ in addition to the ‘Critics’ Choice Movie Awards,” said Berlin. “We believe the phenomenal success of our Movie Awards show on The CW last year was a harbinger of great things to come. The Nexus 5 is rumored to be upon us soon, and the rumors and leaks are popping up everywhere. 

Google’s latest Nexus device, made by LG, showed up today in a curious place indeed.

Forum user weespeed posted the above picture earlier today, claiming it was the new LG Nexus 5. The user gave  a few observations along with the photo:



Got to handle the Nexus 5. It is smaller than the G2.Didn’t actually measure it, but holding it in the hand it is smaller.It does feel good holding it. The black back cover feels like my Nexus 7.The screen was ok, didn’t wow me like the Note 3.The bezel is very small.

The phone certainly looks like the alleged Nexus 5 that we’ve been seeing over the past month or so. It’s shown up on Google’s campus, at a party and LG filed for a patent for a device that appears to be the same as well. It’s got a vertical “Nexus” logo like the Nexus 7 and a solid matte black finish.

Over 500,000 People Pirated ‘Breaking Bad’ Series Finale 12 Hours After Appearing Online

Breaking Bad series finale was something for the history books, clocking 500,000 pirated downloads just 12 hours after the first copy appeared online.

Most users who pirate shows and movies do so because of availability issues, which is common outside of the U.S. But the numbers do show the other side of downloading, where users opt to download the content even when legal channels are available.

Based on data from TorrentFreak, 500,000 had downloaded the Breaking Bad finale within just 12 hours of the torrent going live. This puts the Breaking Bad series finale at the top of the chart for the most-pirated TV show of the year, up there with Game Of  Thrones.

According to the cart above, Australia takes the cake, coming in with 18 percent of the total downloads. The U.S. comes in second at 14.5 percent of downloads, which is interesting considering the myriad of legal ways to watch the show there. The U.K. comes in third with 9.3 percent.

At the peak of the downloading frenzy, one single copy of the Breaking Bad finale had over 85,000 downloaders. If we add up the four most popular torrents, we end up with a whopping 190,000 downloaders.

Smartphone cameras have improved a lot in recent years. They even have passable macro modes for focusing on tiny thing. If you want to focus on really small stuff, you’re going to need some additional hardware.

Aydogan Ozcan, a professor of electrical engineering and bioengineering at UCLA has created a smartphone attachment weighing less than half a pound that can detect objects far smaller than the human eye can, including viruses and synthetic nanoparticles.

It is extremely difficult to get clear images of the smallest of the small because the wavelength of light is too long. Doing that with an inexpensive mobile device is even harder. Equipment like the scanning electron microscope is massive and extremely expensive. The device developed by Ozcan is a fluorescent microscope, the body of which was 3D printed. The contraption uses a laser diode, which is directed at samples at a steep angle of roughly 75 degrees. This prevents the scattered light from interfering with the visual data.

The prototype device basically straps on to the back of a phone and lines up with the camera module. This isn’t just a device you can whip out of your pocket and snap a picture of viruses, though. You have to load the sample on a special tray and keep the device stationary to acquire a good image. When done correctly, the mobile sensor can produce images very similar to a scanning electron microscope.



Ozcan’s team used the mobile fluorescent microscope to capture images of the human cytomegalovirus (CMV), which is about 150-300nm in size. CMV is one of the larger viruses, but still tiny. Researchers were also able to detect 100nm nanoparticles marked with polystyrene beads.

Ozcan believes this approach could bring advanced imaging technology to more places, even those without reliable electricity No one can yet estimate how much a production version of the device would cost, but it would probably be far less than a scanning electron microscope and just a little more portable too.
